Is there anything better than to be a part of storytelling itself, having a book read aloud? Only if you then add the author of the story as the teller. The ability to hear the story with the emotions and the inflections of each character as intended has added a whole extra dimension that I really enjoyed here. Neil Gaiman has long been a favorite writer of mine, spinning stories that make me think, make me dream, make me believe. I've read this novel once before, probably in high school, and did not remember much of it by now. I've had to move to audio books to fit my lifestyle, and it was a surprise to find this recording read by Neil Gaiman himself. I was delighted and amazed at the wide range of distinct characters and personalities he was able to portray, consistently and clearly.

3.5 stars. i was definitely out of my comfort zone with this book and while i’m glad i read it, i just don’t think this genre or author is really my cup of tea. i think it was really well done, i just prefer other kinds of books.
To było serio niezłe i rozumiem teraz dlaczego pan Pratchett ma z nim napisane inne książki.
I just finished the book and I'm still formulating my impressions...
The Good:
It was quite a page turner--I read the whole thing in about a day and a half.
The Plot: Enough twists and mysteries to keep me interested
The Style: The writing style was a bit reminiscent of Douglas Adams. Maybe its just that British talent for glorious understatements but I enjoyed it.
The Bad:
The characters were a little...flat: I thought they were all interesting but even at the close of the book, I felt myself wanting to know more about them.
The storyline was a bit aimless: You follow the characters from plot point to plot point without ever really knowing why. They will learn something like "you have to go see X character to get something" They go and get the item but the world around the characters is never really developed enough to give those actions real impact. The Velvets, for example, are a group of characters that, given a more richly detailed world, could have had much more impact than they did.
All in all though, the book was good and I'll give Gaiman's other works a try.

This book is so painfully boring that I had to put in my earphones and turn the volume up so that it was blasting in my ear to keep me engaged. Nothing happens in the story line for the first half! What kind of book takes the entire half of the book to get going? A very poorly written one! Everything is so vague that the reader is left in the dark about the whole point of the book for most of it. This is my second read by Neil Gaiman and I am once again not a fan. I only finished this book because it was a book club read.
