Shon's foray into dark romance is a bold move, and while admirable, it shows. She demonstrates exceptional ability in crafting compelling narratives (the idea is great!), portraying trauma and disability realistically (memory loss and seizures), and handling intimacy well. The dual timelines also enhance the narrative.
However, the story feels underdeveloped, needing more pages to flesh out the main characters' personalities and behaviors. For example, the FMC's hinted spectrum traits or her "outbursts", which don't convey genuine violence or hate, undermining the dark romance aspect. I don’t think she is violent! She’s trying to survive! 🤷🏾♀️ Also, both the FMC and MMC are likable but not memorable. The MMC's family dynamics, particularly the interplay of parental harshness and gentleness, warrant further exploration to fully convey their complexity. Additionally, a deeper examination of the grandfather's role would significantly enrich the narrative.
While this book didn't live up to her previous works for me (most of hers live rent free in my head), I anticipate Shon's future contributions to the dark romance genre. And, congrats Shon on your first dark romance!
