I started listening to this audiobook on a long drive, thinking it might help pass the time. Usually I have a hard time maintaining focus on audiobooks, especially when driving, as my mind tends to wander. That wasn't a problem with this book, though. My mind was engaged the whole time, to the point that I was almost disappointed when I reached my destination before the book was over! I will definitely read and/or listen to other books by Peter May in the future!

To win a bet Enzo Macleod has to solve the 10 year old disappearance of a public figure. Set in France this is an interesting read and drags you in as he tries to piece together the few mysterious clues available. Enzo is not a police officer, nor a private detective, but he is intelligent and very capable of bringing together small and seemingly unrelated things.

There are two draw backs to this story. The use of French words that I have no understanding of and really are just a pain to have in the story. The other drawback to the story is the rather abrupt and predictable ending. I just didn't like the ending.

However, it's still worth a read.

I am a massive Peter may fan, and accidentally came across his Macleod thrillers in the wrong order. So this was my 5th book in the series, although it's actually the first. I'm glad I didn't start with this one, as it is my least favourite so far, and I fear it may have put me off reading the rest, which are amazing! This story is very long-winded, and I found the constant 'let's look this up on the internet' to be boring, dull and predictable. Anyone can search the Internet for things... I wouldn't recommend you starting with this book, or at least don't judge the rest on this one. It was ok, nothing special.

— Jinak přes změnu kulis, čtenář dostane většinu ingrediencí, které zná z jiných detektivních románů Petera Maye: tedy složité mezilidské vztahy, plné traumat, divoké zvraty děje, zajímavé a barvitě popsané lokace a zázraky soudní medicíny.

These 6 books really are one story and it pays off reading them in order and together - at least closely enough to still remember the others. It's not necessary to enjoy each but I feel there is an additional payoff for still remembering more of the details. All of them are very entertaining and quick to read. If you enjoyed discovering the Outer Hebrides of Scotland in the Lewis Trilogy you will probably also love being transported to a different location in France in this series. Highly recommended.
