Polacco’s books are always so meaningful because many of them come from stories from her family history. This book is the story of her grandmother.
As a little girl, Estella latches on to books and has a passion for sharing her love of reading. She collects so many books, her father ends up building a small shed next to their house as a library. Stella welcomes all to her library and travels the countryside doing her best to spread literacy. Then tragedy strikes.
I won’t give it away. But this is a story that will melt any book lover’s heart. So special.

I have LITERALLY never read a [a:Patricia Polacco|46688|Patricia Polacco|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1609790415p2/46688.jpg] book I didn't love. Loved them as a kid. Love reading them to my kids now.
I'm consistently amazed by the stories Patricia Polacco discovers and the way she re-tells them. Many of which are from her own history! Absolutely loved this one about a girl with a love for learning, a library, and neighbors helping each other out.
Lovely little story about one of the author's grandmother's a young lady born in "a mermaid's purse" (aka: with a caul), who can predict storms and loves books beyond almost anything else. She goes on to introduce her neighbours and friends to the joy of books, and finds that in return, they rebuild her library when a tornado wipes it out.
After a long long time I read one of Patricia polacco’s books because my sister asked why I don’t read anymore of her books. I ordered two from the library and this was the first one I read. As usual it was a beautiful story about the power of books and stories which I always love to read about and it was beautifully illustrated.
I love that Patricia Polacco writes stories from her family. Knowing that as you read gives you a feeling of connectedness and family. Another great one. I love books as does Polacco’s grandmother. Beautifully written with photographs to share at the end.
Patricia Polacco never disappoints! It made me cry, of course...
A lovely story of a bibliophile and the community that loved her.
