Gorgeous womanist reflections on the blues, Black embodiment, and LGBTQ welcome in Black churches. If I ever get to teach Black theology in an Episcopal seminary (oh please, oh please) this book goes to the top of the syllabus. Students in that context will resonate deeply with Brown Douglas' orthodox Episcopal faith (incarnation, resurrection, eucharist, it's all here), which I hope will help them hear her call to the "crossroads" where being on the margin makes you strong and gives you voice.

I could wish, as a scholar, for more historical precision around many of her claims, and some chapters are padded. But honestly, if I can write this accessibly about matters this important while still bringing new life into well-known theo-musical tropes, I'll have achieved all I can hope for as an academic writer.
