I was cracking up the entire time I read this book. Not because it was funny but because it was so similar to other series. It had all the proper YA faerie ingredients, moody sad boy moments, angry heroine, strange family dynamics, shining golden prince, etc. I can’t complain though because I read it in one sitting. It was a fun read if you like fairy tale retellings (Cinderella) & everything in Alysia’s review bc that’s what made me read it.

For one, I didn't know that this had a love triangle and I hate love triangles. Though this one wasn't too bad. I can see how parts/characters of the book are similar to ACOTAR, but I don't remember enough of The Cruel Prince to see similarities. Some concepts aren't original, but ??? that doesn't mean its not good.

I definitely enjoyed this book but what holds it back from being 5 stars for me is the feeling of needing a little more background, more information. And I don't mean that in the plot sense, but character relationship sense. I felt like the book should've shown a little more of the relationship Brie had with Bash before crossing the portal and the relationship that Brie grew with Finn. Throughout the book, some scenes just kinda transitioned too soon. There were very few interactions with Finn and more with Pretha so I understood their growing friendship. Brie's power of shadow should've been a little bit more introduced than it finally manifesting in the fae world. I get that the fae world intensified everything, but you're telling me that for 18 years? she never questioned how well she was at thievery and how no one could spot her? ALSO how did everyone know her business, how was she not paranoid of spies in her room since Mordeous, Finn, and Bash always knew shit they weren't even involved in.

Past those things, I want more Finn (Chapter 26!!!). I didn't really care for Bash because I felt like he was hiding something the entire time. It was too good to be true. Like why did he choose to live a human life and get close to Brie out of all people? Coincidence, I think not.

The betrayals and how everyone had their own interests at heart, but Brie getting upset when she was technically doing the same to Bash, kept throwing me through a loop. Loved how she killed Mordeous and found a way to not take a side (kinda). I'm surprised she left her sister in the human world at the end and I hope the next book touches base with that cause Jas seemed traumatized af.

Also this is not a YA book in my opinion...

I very much enjoyed this book. It was very very similar to ACOTAR in a lot of ways, but it had its own twists and turns that kept me reading. I hope the 2nd one impresses me just as much as the first.

I have never felt so FRUSTRATED with a main character after finishing a book. It's fitting that I finished this on April 1st because her decision-making was an absolute joke for the last 20% of the book. That said, I genuinely enjoyed myself and am downloading the second book ASAP in the hopes that she redeems herself!!
