This book is perfection, and I love this series with my whole heart. Comfort characters and series. It is very rare for an author to successfully introduce new characters in a final installment and make the reader love them but I did. Jix was complicated but I ended up loving him and the brief view we got of the city of souls was more than enough for the story, I loved the journey we went on with nick and Allie and Mikey and Mary, all of their stories had a wonderfully written and careful ending that made me either gasp or cry or both. This book covered a lot of ground too but it did not feel rushed.
Mary’s spiral into wanting to end the living world and bring all worthy aspects to Everlost was amazingly written and powerful. Her relationship with Milos and its down spiral was harrowing to watch. The addition of Clarence the scar wraith and the power he possessed simply because everyone believed it was powerful and terrifying and I felt so bad for him at times. Shusterman even managed to make me feel bad for Jackin’ Jill! How?!?! No idea but I did and I loved her with Jix. I totally called the kings adviser as Vari as soon as Jix said it was the adviser who warned him of the eastern witch. The finale taking place at ground zero for the manhattan project was inspired and also terrifying. All of milos’s and Mary’s schemes to not only create souls but to create skinjackers!?!?! 🤯 Mikey’s love for Allie and nick’s love for Mary I just.., I can’t say enough about this book.
read this!!

I really enjoyed this series! There were some great poignant moments and bits of prose that are so well written! I think this is really what distinguishes Shusterman from most of the YA authors I've read.

One of my favorite lines: "Allie knew that Mary's light was false -- a trick, just like the glow of the moon, which is nothing more than a dead rock reflecting the light of something far greater than itself."

I think why I ultimately couldn't give this series 5 stars is the character of Mary (and to a lesser degree, Milos). She just frustrated me so much it sapped my enjoyment of the story. I know a good villain is a wonderful thing, but she was just too whack to understand. I think the author tried hard to get her POV across but it just made me want to throttle her.

I want to write this really really long amazing review. I honestly have a lot to say. The problem with that is that in order to really get it all out this would be a review filled with nothing but spoilers!

Suffice to say.... Good ending to a great series. Everything from my Everwild review still stands in this book. I adore Mikey and Allie. They were my favorite and I could read a whole book just about them. I love and ache for Nick. I hate, loathe, and despise Mary to the depths of my soul. I have a weird mix of disgust and sympathy for Milos. And I really grew to love Jill and Jix (slight spoiler, sorry! Try not to forget those names!).

Bittersweet. It happened the way it should.

I can't wait until you all read it!

This was such an amazingly good series! This final book was gorgeous and made me cry. This is one I'll be talking up to everyone I know. I'm going to go back and write more complete reviews of all three books, in an attempt to do the series justice.

This was such a cool series! I read the first two books and listened to this installment on Audible. I gotta say, either way you choose to go, you can't lose. Nick Podhel does a great job capturing the spirit of Everlost and giving voice to a motley group of characters.

There was a LOT going on in this book, but I thought it did the story justice and wrapped everything up brilliantly. I appreciated that not everyone got their happy ending. While some of the kids don't 'get to where they're going,' and the story continues for some of the kids, you feel good about our time in Everlost coming to an end at this point. There are no loose ends and no unanswered questions (at least none that I could think of), which is amazing considering the grand scale of Everlost and just how many characters have been introduced over the course of the three books.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would absolutely recommend it to adults and tweens alike. My very picky 13-year-old son is currently reading Book 1 and has been totally sucked in. He's about 75% done with it, and he's already itching for Book 2. That alone gets this series a five-star rating from me!
