As a mythology lover and someone who was obsessed with the hunger games in their teens I thought this would be one of my favourite reads. However, I have been reading this book since september and only finished it because I read it as a buddy read. The story took over 200 pages before something interesting happened. Aside from that I thought the ending was predictable and towards the end some parts just felt super cliché and unnecessarily sappy.
I have to admit the middle part contained some cool plottwists I did not see coming and I absolutely adored the side characters and throwbacks.
The book was overall well written and I am sure there are people out there who love it, it just wasn’t for me.
Before reading this book I would recommend you to have at least some prior knowledge of greek mythology, as there is no explanation on the abilities of the gods and what they stand for.

I really love Greek mythology and YA so this should have been impeccable but I have mixed feelings about it.
It was very convoluted in places and often I just had no idea what was going on. However, the writing is brilliant and the characters are great (I loveeeee Miles). I love the world building (when I could make sense of it). But it was annoying because I got bored at like 80% in and just skipped through the rest. The ending was also…insanely anticlimactic.
I’m torn, to be honest.

Probably more a 3.5 than a 3 - I need my half-star ratings! This was a really interesting standalone fantasy and I was definitely intrigued by the premise... I just found that I didn't connect with the way it was written, or the characters, as much as I'd have liked to. There was one or two particularly oddly written scenes towards the end that I just struggled with.
There is a fair bit of violence here, but none of it felt excessively graphic or unnecessary. This is still a book I can definitely recommend to YA readers - I just won't be gushing about it.
Things I did like: Miles, plot twists, how Bracken wove Ancient Greece into modern NY, that cover!
Things I didn't like: the society, sexual predators, the general ickiness of many side-characters.
