Haunting, with an action-packed climax, Ghost Bird is a book I won't hesitate to recommend to YA readers. Great characters and an engaging exploration of culture (even if it was somewhat fictionalised to avoid misappropriation - author's words). I'll never look at shadows and ghost birds in the same way again.

Acknowledgement: I read this book and wrote this review whilst on the traditional lands of the Pambalong Clan of the Awabakal people, and on the traditional lands the Wonnarua people. I would like to pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I listened to this book on Invasion Day as my own little fuck you/support indigenous Australians political protest and it fucking slapped.

I don’t want to say too much about this for fear of spoiling anything but I will say that it was insanely atmospheric and tense. Listening to the audiobook while the world turned to twilight added an element of *shudder* that I cannot overstate. I already want to listen/read this one again and I wished more people talked about it.

I’d heard good things about this book and the beautiful little CBCA shortlist sticker on the cover cemented it as a must read. I really enjoyed this one; it was eerie and strange and honest and funny and complex and a real page turner.

Spooky and spellbinding. Wonderful story of family bonds and learning from history.
