I loved the 2022 film adaptation of this novel, but the book didn't work for me in the same way. Suzanne Allain describes herself as a screenwriter, and Mr. Malcolm's List seems like a perfect affirmation of that description. Most of the movie's dialogue follows the book word for word, but it works on screen because it has all the extra elements of that medium to give it the emphasis it needs. On paper, Allain writes fairly minimally, and therefore leaves out much of the pacing and emotional weight captured on screen.
A historical romance set in the early 1800s in London. Seline Dalton, a twenty two year old lady goes to London to visit with an old classmate Julia. Julia has plans for Seline once she gets there. She plans to use Seline to avenge herself from the wrong she feels Mr. Malcolm has done to her. It was a fast paced and interesting tale of misunderstandings.

Who could want Malcom when Henry Ossory is in the same room????
While I wouldn’t consider this book a romance novel I did still enjoy it. It kind of drags on a bit especially towards the end but it’s a very quick read.
3.5/5 stars

It was fun and a little stupid but not in a way that detracted from the fun. More historically grounded than the average of its genre which I appreciated.
The dialogue and breezy nature of this book made it more of a modern romance masquerading as a regency, but it also made it highly readable.
It's not steamy by modern standards, but quite scandalous for the regency era (especially for a respectable gentleman and a Vicar's daughter)! Things like that normally bother me, but I was in the mood for a light read tonight and this fit the bill so I am being much more forgiving than usual. I think this could be better as a movie than a book.

Lack of characterization for Malcolm character was so significant I was left totally confused by their attachment.

I really enjoyed the general style of her writing! However I wish there was a bit more social commentary in this considering it’s a regency era fiction
