Mr. Malcolm's List

It's fine

Mr. Malcom's List first caught my attention when I saw the trailer for the movie adaptation. After reading the book, I have no interest in seeing the movie. It was entertaining enough, but I wasn't wowed by it. There were some fun moments and the female lead was enjoyable (the male lead... not so much).
This was a 3 star read for me. Not the best historical romance, but far from the worst.

A delightful regency romp.

Julia Thistlewaite had set her sights on Mr Malcolm, one accompaniment to the opera and she was sure that this was heading to courtship and marriage. However, after not hearing from him for a week she enlists her cousin Mr Cassidy (Cassie) to find out what is going on.

Mr Malcolm is a weathly son of an Earl, who has his fair share of interested ladies. However, none of them seem to meet the standard he has set on his list. Something he shares with Cassie when he is asked about Julia.

After hearing about his list Julia invites a friend, Selina Dalton, she knew at school to London on an attempt to gain payback on Mr Malcolm. Selina is reluctant to get involved after hearing the plan after her arrival in lon but goes ahead with it as she feels Mr Malcolm would never fall in love with her.

A brief meeting in a darkened library Mr Malcolm and Selina make quite the impression on each other before they are formally introduced. What follows is a series of miscommunications, silly schemes and a big dose of pride.

A light, comic dose of Jane Austen style romance - although with the odd embrace and kiss thrown in for good measure.

It is a rare thing to say, but the movie adaptation was better. However, I didn't scream, "I want my life back!" after reading this book. The characters were more likeable in the movie than in the book.

Did this read like a bad Jane Austen fanfic? Yes.
Was it historically accurate? No.
Was Selina Dalton a pick me? Yes.
Was Jeremy Malcom worth a damn? No.
Was Julia thistle-something a major bitch? Yes.
Did lord Cassidy’s character have a point? No.
But did I enjoy reading this tragic mess of a book? Yes.

Not every book has to have a five star rating to enjoy. I’m looking forward to the movie.

This was a lighthearted take of a historical romance. A step-sibling to Pride and Prejudice, the duos of Selina and Julia and Malcom and Cassie are reminiscent of the Bennett sisters and their beaus while also being unique to their own story. I felt like there could’ve been a little more romance conveyed through the plot or the dialogue, but given the time period of this book I can understand why it may have been somewhat lacking. But overall, this was an enjoyable read!

This was cute enough but I'm more excited for the film adaptation starring Gemma Chan and Freida Pinto

This was a cute, easy read. A modern take on a regency romance for sure. I am definitely excited for the film version though after reading up on the cast!

This book gave me happy, pride and prejudice vibes and I loved it.
