I kid you not. I started this book this afternoon and finished it within a few hours. I haven't done that in a while, so kudos to this book for that. However, although I just finished it, I don't have much to say about it. It was a nothingbook to me. I was looking for a steamy book, and I love Katee Robert's Dark Olympus series, so I decided to give this book a try.
I would say she's definitely improved, but you can definitely see some semblance of her current writing style in this book. This book was just pretty meh. I wasn't a big fan of Jafar in the first half and him "owning" Yasmina. It just gave me the ick. But then again, this is sorta a dark romance so I pushed my morals aside.
One thing I do like is that, although this is one of her earlier series, Katee still prioritizes consent in her books. Something I wish was more prevalent in dark romance books. And the ages between the main characters aren't weird. Now, I got the editions were all the extra stuff and her annotations which was cool. And I will say I have to agree with Katee, I am a sucker for the MMC being a big sofie for the FMC which is why I enjoy her book because the main guys aren't complete a**holes. However, I will say Jafar is the most unlikeable of the MMC from her that I've read so far. Just wasn't a big fan of how he tried to confine her and control every facet of her life. It was just such a turn-off
I knew what this book was going into it. However, I will say it's still not my favorite from her. I was expecting a fun spicy time, but the only smut scene I liked was the first one. I'm just not a fan of the daddy kink AT ALL. And what sucks is that I accidentally read another book this month with that kink; like what are the odds?!😖It just cringes me out. And I'm also not a fan of powerplay sex, so the sex scenes in this book weren't my favorite. The plot was mild. It progresses as well as it could considering the amount of smut in this book and how short the book was. There wasn't much progression in the romance either. When they said their "I love you"s I couldn't help but feel nothing. It was fine overall, but definitely one of my least favorite books from her. I hear the other books in this series are better, so whenever I'm in the mood for a steamy book, I'll know where to go.
Note: If you loved this book, there is a deluxe edition with bonus content if you're interested. However, if you're planning on listening to the audiobook, be careful because certain dialogue doesn't align with the physical copy, at least not the one I had. I wasn't too big a fan of the male narrator, but what can you do?
Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5 (#daddy kink, #sharing, #domxsub/brat, #powerplay)

Jasmine+ Jafar=woo hoo! I'm excited for villain fanfic, let's do this!
...I feel bad for a two star rating, but I'm rating it exactly the way that Goodreads considers a 2-star read: "It was OKAY." Because actually, this was a slightly torturous 200 pages. It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly what went wrong for me while reading this-- I didn't like Jasmine, but I also found Jafar to be an unlikable male lead.
Much of the smut is dub/con and daddy dom. Jasmine's story is about being free to make her own choices and do what she wants. 200 pages with this type of smut doesn't really give Jasmine and Jafar time to build a relationship that gives Jasmine what she needs in a believable way (I mean believable within the world. After all, the whole thing is unbelievable, but meant to be fun, right?)
Will try book 2 (Hades and Meg)... but the real winning character that was introduced in Desperate Measures was Tinkerbell. :)
