I thought the book was a little slow to start, but Acevedo does a wonderful job building these characters up brick-by-brick so that you feel as though you can see them for everything they are, right from their very foundation. This pays off, at least in my opinion, as this book has one of those endings that feels so organic and so obvious that I cannot imagine it coming to pass Amy other way. This is a heartfelt novel, full of love, family trauma and bonding, and ultimately celebration in the face of sorrow.

I am so sad I didn’t like this book, I absolutely loved all her previous ones, but this one felt disjointed and impersonal, I didn’t really cared for any of the characters, too many through too many timelines.

A fantastic family portrait with the most lyrical language. A wonderful contribution to the magical realism tradition of Latin America. I recommend for fans of Isabel Allende and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Also, the audiobook is narrated by the author, who does a wonderful job!
