historical romance is out, historian romance is IN 🤓

Another great poly romance from Sierra Simone! I feel in love with her books after "A Lesson In Thorns" and am so glad I picked this one up, too.

The relationship here is definitely messy and at times a bit unbalanced but it's only the first book and I hope that will have changed by the end.

There are some taboo themes here, like incest (not main couple) but the last book I read from the author was a priest romance so that didn't surprise me.

I almost wanted things to be more taboo or at least dark at times – everyone tells us Ash is soo bad and has soo many dark secrets and maybe I've become desensitized but his secrets were all pretty tame. He has such great morally grey potential and I hope we'll see some of that in the next books 🤞🏻

While the relationship was so well written and engaging, I have to agree with other (mainly European) reviewers when it comes to the worldbuilding. There's this war ✨somewhere✨ in East Europe and it's just a garbled mix of cultures and history. Similar to how Ash is a third-party candidate instead of a Democrat or Republican, I wish the author would've been brave enough to just name the politics she's writing instead of being evasive.

3/5 overall, 4/5 spice
This book is a compelling why choose. The man characters have a kink that is a bit taboo, so check your TW's; MMC 100% takes control; Definitely a smut-forward story; not a bad read, just not great/overly memorable.

I wish there was a little more build to the plotline as I had lots of questions - though now that I am reading book 2 in the series, some of these questions have been resolved.

I'll read the series but not 100% sure yet if I'd recommend to others. Stay tuned.

Look, I really like reading books containing kink & polyamory. But I need that kink to be ethical.
There is material in this book that IMHO runs from unethical to dubiously ethical. And, no, having a safe word isn’t enough to make kink ethical. I’m still wondering how much is inescapable because of the source material (adultery, incest, murder, etc). But… surely there were either ways to adapt it or at the very least not add to its problematic nature.
I guess we’re just supposed to pine over a MMC who at 26 became obsessively attracted to a girl who had just been 15?? And then made out with her knowing she was a minor?! No discussion of limits prior to entering a total Dom/sub relationship? I guess the FMC doesn’t get to be consulted about her new partners wearing condoms (not once but twice)?  I like so much of Simone’s work that these felt like surprising mis-steps.
