DNF'd this book because somehow, the writer managed to hit all my pet peeves.
1. Classic mean girls. The whole plot kicks off because of some mean, mean girls. I mean, do people actually act like that in real life?? I don't think so???
2. The names. Literally, the love interest's name is Zane Caldwell. Not really a huge factor for me, but just a minor annoyance that broke the camel's back.
3. The pacing. It may just be me, but it feels like the book went from 0 to 100 real fast...like whiplash-level, break-neck speed. I don't like how quickly everything happened, and how...anticlimactic that whole discovery was. It just felt passive and flat to me.
4. The party scene.
Anyway, I stopped reading at this point. Should I have anticipated this from the blurb? Probably. The love interest's description in the blurb should've been enough. But the concept seemed super interesting and I was excited to see where it was going to go :(

Spoiler
There's a scene where some creep is forcibly kissing the main character, and guess who shows up to save the day with a growly "She said no!" and a yeet across the room? That's right—the love interest. Why is this a plot device? If the only way to show that the love interest is not an asshole is by having him "rescue" the main character from being sexually harassed...well. Maybe the character needs work.Anyway, I stopped reading at this point. Should I have anticipated this from the blurb? Probably. The love interest's description in the blurb should've been enough. This.. is not well written.
But I can tell that it was written for fun.
It's very fast paced. Especially the.. romance.

very fast read, not very well written.
I really enjoyed this book! I have read other books by this author and I absolutely love the world she has created! It's fun to see the crossover of characters from her other books.

I'm so excited to be revisiting the Elementals world and it was fun as a reader to see how it's been going for past favorite characters. That said, this series can definitely be read before the original one. There's still a month to go for the release date and it took me less than a month to binge it so if you're reading this review before the pub date you have time to read them first.
That's the thing about Madow's writing style: every book in every series is a binge read. I cannot set her books down and it's always a joy to get lost in the worlds she creates. The Elementals Academy was no different and the MC was really relatable. (For those who've read the Vampire Wish, she reminded me a lot of Annika) The friendships also rounded out the book. It's nice to have a friend with a voice reason to help pull you out of making choices out of hormones. Learning more about other mythologies was cool too.
If I had anything a little meh about it, was how the love interest treated the mc in some parts. I'll just never be okay with using manipulation as a tactic for any reason. Oh, and the twilight references were a little too strong for my tastes. But that's a personal preference because I really disliked Edward Cullen. These two things are only enough to bring it down to a 4.5 rating, but since I read it quickly and became immersed in the book I'm rounding it up to a 5.
Thank you for the advanced copy, this is my honest review.
