I loved this!

The format? Perfection! Did I know I was signing up for a play? No, but this was brilliant!

About 80% through, I felt like there was going to be a sequel and I panicked because I thought this was a standalone. I was pleased that the epilogue wrapped things up rather nicely, though it felt a little rushed. I almost wish that another book had been made instead of rushing it in the epilogue.

Not as strong as A.B. Poranek's first novel - but the characters and the banter were great it just felt like the pacing was a bit off.

this was very very nice!! i enjoyed it a lot :”) i loved all the characters and the setting was so good !! the mystery had some predictable parts and some unpredictable ones

the only things that made me kinda laugh were the cliches and all the times the mc / narrator said “i hated this thing/person.” and the paragraph after was like “actually i kinda enjoyed / liked this thing/person” lol

Oh wow this is so much better than I was expecting! Poranek is able to craft such an enveloping atmosphere. And the re-imagining of the classic Swan Lake story is genuinely inventive with an intriguing magic system. The political intrigue is also deftly woven into the story with one twist in particular that had me audibly gasp.

Odile and Marie's relationship absolutely carries this story. Their initial interactions and banter is delightful and their arc is beautiful as each learns to slowly trust the other.

There are many parts of this I did find predictable, especially with Odile's dynamic with Regnault and the overall purpose for her mission and the outcome of her feelings about it. Nevertheless, the characters and magic component breathe new life into the familiar fantasy tropes.

Also the standard hardback cover is simply divine! The swan and beast on the back cover and gold thread winding around each side brilliantly capture the ethereal tone of the story.
