i wanna go to camp QUILTBAG!

i thought QUILTBAG was a really fun way of organizing the LBGTQIA+ community label. and the fact that all the campers were called different words for knitting and crocheting!

Abigail and Kai were so sweet and so lovable. and so YOUNG. there were times where i cringed a little at their grievances because they’re So twelve and thirteen year old grievances, but it tracks bc they’re twelve and thirteen!!

i loved watching them come into their own and gain confidence and make queer friends. bc it’s hard!! i feel that especially as an adult!! making queer friends is hard!!

i also loved the idea of being able to change name and pronouns as the characters saw fit. not everyone identifies as cis or feels comfortable identifying with the same gender expression every day!!

this book was so open and openhearted and Kind and i just love summer camp books 😭

A heartfelt #ownvoices middle grade novel with a full cast of queer characters who find friendship, belonging and acceptance at a unique summer camp for LGBTQIA+ kids.

I really appreciated the emphasis on different pronouns - listening to this book helped make the e/em/eir option feel more normalized the more I heard it.

Overall this was such a diverse book with Jewish, BIPOC, trans, pan, nonbinary (and more) characters. Definitely the book so many middle grade children will be glad is out there when they're ready to read it. Highly recommended and a perfect summer or #PrideMonth read!

A fun queer little middle grade that I'll definitely be recommending to my niblings when they're old enough but I think I prefer AJ Sass's solo work.

Oh my goodness. This is such a warm, fuzzy hug of a book for queer people. I want to buy a million copies and hand them out to everyone who needs this. Which we probably all do, in the current environment. So many shapes and colours of queer in this book, and so much love and understanding. I was afraid there might be unresolved bits of angst at the end, but everything was beautifully wrapped up.
I am definitely going to buy at least one personal copy and probably keep it under my pillow for the love and reassurance of it. If you only read one queer middle grade novel this year (and I hope you will read many more), read this one.
A huge thank you to the authors, publisher, and all involved in making this happened!
