The original 50 shades of grey, but with a slightly better plot and higher caliber of writing. Still doesn't make it great. I understand the historical significance of this novel, but, it's just not my thing. 2.5/5

ok here’s my thing. usually books that women got in trouble for writing because they were “scandalous” in the mid 20th century are not that at all. this one…was like 75 shades of grey.
like, i am impressed. that being said, it was extremely uncomfortable and difficult to get through and i’m glad to be done with it. i was honestly surprised this was written by a woman, it was so male sounding.
sorry pauline, i respect the hustle but you’re too much for me ✋

STRUGGLE. I went in knowing the subject matter was dark and taboo… but it’s the actual writing style that bothers me.

I´ve finally finished this book and I´m glad that it´s over.
My problem is, that I can´t stop reading a book once I´ve started and that I have to finish it.

Maybe it was a kind of scandal when it was published, but I can´t really appreciate this book. I think it was a kind of scary.
But anyway, it wasn´t worse than 50 shades, but yeah, that´s not too hard to achieve anyway. (I´m sorry...)
I guess it´s not the book, it´s just me. I didn´t like the way it was written with indirect speech (which was the case in the German version I´ve read, I don´t know about the English one.)

But it wasn´t all super bad. I liked the psychological aspect of the story, O´s development and simply the fact, that a WOMAN in the 50´s could write something like that. And I don´t know why, I think, that this story of slavery is a kind of feministic, because it´s O´s very own choice to become unfree and in her complete submission, she can become free, because it´s her own will. Oh my, that sounds very confusing (the fact that I´m a native German speaker and I mess up with my English grammar doesn´t make it better), but I hope, you understand what I mean.

But yeah, 2 stars, because I can´t like the writing and because I may not be the perfect reader for this one...

Saw this making its rounds on TT and I thought why not read this book from 1954.

This is either the worst thing for women or its way ahead of its time and feminist. I honestly don't know.
