Outstanding.

It's been two years since I read Six Stories, the first book of this series, and looking back on that one I had given it five stars despite expecting a different conclusion (I don't remember my thoughts now, to tell the truth!). I had wrestled with a four or five star rating and decided on five because I was so enthralled and absolutely burned through it.

So why did I wait two years before reading this one? Well, the answer is admittedly stupid: these novels are very cheap in price. Ridiculously cheap for Kindle as of yesterday, the rest of them on for 73 cents (I bought 'em all)! And, these novels have zero hype, they are off any radar I typically watch, so stupid me has to think: they can't be that good, can they?
Well, wrong. The first novel was quite good, but this one was so good it may be one of my top reads of the year. No, it will be.

For those few who are familiar with the series, these novels are written with an almost identical vibe as the Serial podcast. Each novel examines a crime and our host interviews six people close to the events. With six separate perspectives he hopes to shed more light on any ambiguities and perhaps solve a missing link.
These could be discounted as cheap knockoffs of Serial but what makes them great are Matt Wesolowski's talent for characters. He absolutely nails each one of them (particularly the last one, I won't reveal any of his guests; it's too fun to be surprised with each episode) and like Six Stories, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

Hydra surrounds the years-old case of Arla, who murdered her mother, stepfather, and sister. Arla is presently a prisoner in a facility for the criminally insane and our host, Scott King, explores Arla's delusions, her troubled past as youth, and what may have led to that fateful night.

I loved everything about this installment, including the ending.
As I mentioned earlier, I have bought all six novels and there is no way two years is going to pass before I get to the next one. I always like to break things up so I don't tire of a format but it is going to be really hard to decided on my next read. The best reading experiences leave a reading hangover and I've got a doozy happening right now.

Five big stars. Thanks again to my Goodreads friend Michelle for her reviews that put this series on my radar. I would never have heard of it otherwise, which is such a crime because this guy deserves all the hype.

More of a horror read than a thriller. Tightly crafted and scary.

I was in two minds about this book. It started out well but really dragged in the middle and focused too much on the folk tales i nearly gave up on the book a few times but forced myself to pressed on otherwise I would have rated this 2 stars however the twist at the end made me give it the three stars.
