so glad i reread this. not as traumatizing as it was when i was 13. so much better than the fucking movie. such a good criticism of 80s yuppie culture. bret easton ellis is a psychopath but he is a genius.
Starting from 3 stars, I added 1 star for the writing, deducted 1/2 of a star for the terrible things to dogs, deducted another 1/2 of a star for the seemingly endless gratuitous sexual violence, and then added another 1/2 of a star for actually being able to make MY stomach turn (nearly impossible). Well done, Ellis. Many have tried, most have failed.

Det här är ingen lättsmält bok och det finns flertalet stycken som jag skummade igenom: haranger om vad folk har på sig, kapitel om teknologi och musik som lika gärna skulle kunna vara en Wikipedia-sida och de detaljrikt beskrivna morden av kvinnor. Dessa tre kategorier förekommer så ofta att efter den andra eller tredje så har du tillräcklig kunskap om Patrick Bateman (aka det amerikanska överklassamhället) och följande beskrivningar mestadels är där för att betona det monotona i Batemans existens. Dessa stycken gör dock att boken får en 3a istället för en 4a.
American Psycho är ju känd för att vara tvetydig och det gör boken bara bättre. Att inte veta vad som har hänt eller inte är den bleka sanningen om att vissa liv inte har ett värde (OBS. Inte min personliga åsikt). Vi kan jämföra med att den enda personen som "saknas" av andra är en rik vit man och att taxichauffören med ett påbrå som inte nämns annat genom att han får heta Abdullah tar hämnd för en bekants mord genom att råna Bateman. Alltså inte ringa polisen. För mig handlar det om maktbalans snarare än att taxichauffören inte vill att Bateman ska hamna i fängelse. Det är bättre att ta saken i egna händer än att överlämna den till händer som troligtvis redan står på överklassens sida och avgudar dem för sina pengar.
Det är helt klart en känga för det hjärndöda samhället där alla kan vara alla men ingen kan vara vem som helst.

This felt like the longest book I've ever read.
Completely depraved, though stomachable if taken in the context of a social satire on the American psyche.
If the film were even half as graphic as the book was, Christian Bale would be on death row. 'nuff said.

Struggled to finish the novel. I've read some of Ellis' other work, and he is undeniably talented. The intentionally boring prose delivered throughout the novel overstays its welcome within a hundred pages, and the graphic, lurid sex scenes that escalate into horrific murderous violence are simply unpleasant to read. Aspects of this novel work immensely well, the commentary on the vapidity of that brand of hollow 1980s lifestyle and its inherent contraindications stand out. But the boring prose and excessive sexual violence come together for an unpleasant read.
Watch the movie, it's a better use of your time, and Christian Bale really gives a hell of a performance.
