“Surface, surface, surface was all that anyone found meaning in… this was civilization as I saw it, colossal and jagged…”

Numbing, excessive detail on clothes, music and murder was difficult to get through, though I understand its aesthetic purpose. I do not believe the book is sexist simply because Bateman is.

Listened to the audiobook and now I'm mentally scarred for life. Jesus wept.

If this book wasn’t so repulsive and difficult to get through, it could have been rated higher. I’m afraid in this instance, I’m rating the book based on its content. I really thought I had a high threshold for violence but this book took the cake. I put it on hold numerous times since I started reading it purely because it was so difficult to stomach. Definitely a cool look at society’s hyper consumerism but also... yikes.

Wow wtf did I just read??

DID NOT FINISH: 48%

DNF 191 pages in. Writing is extremely dense with the most monotonous and mind numbing descriptions that I just can’t focus on. I get that’s probably what the writer was going for, but my eyes would roll back into my skull every time a character would make an appearance in the story because it meant the next 3 pages were going to be dedicated to an extensive description of all the designer clothes brands they were wearing and what hair gel they used. Just really hard to push through a lot of the time.

Love the absolute deranged mashup of thoughts in this book. The repetition of fashion and styles is boring and hypnotic at the same time. The skin care sermons and restaurant name drops, coupled with the sudden atrocity shouldn’t work but it works precise because of it. The moral whiplash I got for reading enthusiastically about the depraved actions of Bateman is exactly why this book deserved a 5 star. It’s disturbing in a great way. Intentionally mind numbing for a good 50 pages in the beginning but once we are in the lull, the real Bateman comes out.
