This book was one of the most disturbing that I have ever read. I really felt as though I was in the mind of a psychopath serial killer. It begins very subtle and almost boring and then quickly becomes a tornado of murder and debauchery the likes of which i have never seen in a printed book before. I felt during some scenes a vile sense of dread and disgust which might be followed by an entire chapter about a specific 1980s era musician or mind numbingly specific stero equipment review.

I think this is a great book and it really makes you think and feel things, some of which are not good feelings.

10/10 and I wouldn't recomend this book to anyone who doesnt already know they might like it.

Being inside Bateman’s head is decidedly exhausting and banal, there’s no escaping the inner monologue the way you kind of can in the movie. This escalated in a way I wasn’t expecting and I read most of the back half with my head in my hands.

I picked up this book after seeing yet another reference to the movie adaptation, since I'm more squeamish about violence in visual form over text, and was shocked to find out that this might be more graphic in that sense. I still felt a sense of distance from the various horrors in text form, and despite there being some quite disturbing scenes, it started getting old near the end of the book so the psychological effect was lessened. Overall, this felt like a book that would work a little better if several things about it were pared down, such as the extreme superficiality portrayed with excess descriptions. I didn't really enjoy reading this book, but unlike some instances where I still find a work intriguing despite that this story was not holding my interest that strongly.

“there is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there. It is hard for me to make sense on any given level. Myself is fabricated, an aberration. I am a noncontingent human being”
