This one was dark and messed up for sure. I don't have much else to say except I probably won't be able to read this one again!

I enjoy a book that makes me feel grossed out, disgusted, angry, and upset. This was a perfect book to fulfill that need. I'll admit it, I have seen the movie before reading the book. In my defense, I never knew it was based on a book until I finally watched the movie!
My reason for 4 stars and not 5 is because of the number of times I would need to stop reading and spend some time on my phone or computer looking up the various brand names and other descriptions the narrator, Patrick Bateman, gave. Was that completely necessary? Probably not, but I wanted to know exactly what he was describing so I could try to be more immersed in the book.

I guess I can appreciate the insight into the mind of a psychopath and at times it was funny and sad at the same time. Bateman is messed up and you can clearly see that through his internal monologues or interactions with people day in and day out. But damn ... this was hard to read for something like 85% of the time. I would either be bored reading about what people were wearing or would get queasy reading about a murder.

". . . there is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: 'I simply am not there' . . . and coming face-to-face with these truths, there is no catharsis. I gain no deeper knowledge about myself, no new understanding can be extracted from my telling. There has been no reason for me to tell you any of this. This confession has meant 'nothing' . . . ."
