everytime a chapter was titled 'girls' i sighed.
personally, i thought the narrative viewpoint and window into bateman's psyche was written spectacularly. the imagery and superficiality of 80s hedonists was captured perfectly in this book, but i could understand how its intensity and bateman's abhorrent personality would deter readers. couldn't say i enjoyed reading it but it was so engrossing and interesting i couldn't put it down..

-1 star for the ending.
-1 star for tone; it feels more provocative than intelligent.
-1 star for overkill; less is more.
I was impressed by the reaction it provoked in me, but that reaction was too strong for me to write much objectively.

I decided to read this book because I bought a poster with 100 books to read in your life. This is book thirty-three on the poster. This book freaked me out mainly because I knew it was based on the 80s, but with the state of men now, it could have been written this year. It makes me want to stay single for the rest of my life.
This book is based on Patrick Bateman, and he is twenty-six years old, and he has it all: good looks, youth, charm, a job on Wall Street, and reservations at every new restaurant in town. He is also a psychopath. A man addicted to his superficial, perfect life, he pulls the readers into a dark underworld where the American Dream becomes a nightmare.
Yes, this book is about a psychopath. I knew about this going into it. But I was more concern about his obsession with Donald Trump which should be a funny joke in 2025, however with the state of American political, it’s not a funny joke. It's a real thing. This is what was freaking me out because it’s supposed to be set in 80s and besides the Walkman getting mentioned every five minutes and Patrick Bateman saying he must return video tapes, it felt like it could have been written in 2025. This book is very violent and graphic, I ended up skimming over most of the rapes and murders because after the first one that we knew about, it was getting repetitive and more gross. Like this man hates women. This could have been a book about how incels were form. Again, freaking me out because I thought it was written in 2025 not 1980.
The way that the writing was done, I was expecting more action and more shocking revelations, but it was so boring. Like I think I missed the first murder besides the fact that he kept the body in his house for a bit and I was like oh shit, think I missed it a bit. It wasn’t like some big action book. The writing was done so poorly. I found myself skimming most of the conversations between the guys because it was repeated shite and then the rapes and murders were just brutal, and the same thing happened.
I know I shouldn’t have expected it, but I wanted more form of ending, I would have liked Patrick Bateman to get arrested or shot. But it just ended abruptly. Do I think this book should have been written in 1980s? No. Is it bad that most men would probably relate to this book in 2025? Yes. The fact that Donald Trump is a point of obsession freaks me out and I don’t think I'll be reading any more books from Bret Easton Ellis or even watching the film.
