The sci fi elements that drew me to this book are lacking, for the most part. I like the parts where the mountain and other effects are bigger and unexplained. Like a lab rat's point of view trying to solve a maze.
Ultimately, the book is fine.
ending is a bit like childhood's end which i think did it better. But aussie rock climber giving the ultimate middle finger to God after taking the red pill is awesome. Fuck those aliens.

Interesting idea but quickly unravels. First sign of trouble was that the author doesn’t know how Americans speak (a battle hardened general calling someone an “obstinate bastard” rather than the more American saying of “stubborn son of a bitch”). It feels very cheesy

One must, I feel, imagine them happy.

is it heavy handed? yes. is the ending cheesy? yes. would it have been better if left more mysterious? yes. however, did i enjoy reading it? also yes. sometimes that’s enough.
