While straightforward as far as Pynchon goes, there is still something woozy about it. Not paranoid in the way that his other works have been, rather unnerved from the drugs and decay of the 60’s. After the love of the 60’s, our country reverted to their vices, and nothing changed for the better. While it is Pynchon through and through, it just isn’t exactly what I want from Pynchon at this point. Funny, hazy, disorienting, and pretty good!

It's surprising that this is Pynchon's first mystery book, his go-to themes are such a natural fit with the genre. I've loved the film for years and was surprised by the cynicism vs PTA's romance, but Pynchon brings a lot more cynicism and capitalist critique, and the Golden Fang as an all-encompassing paranoid conspiracy is explored much more. Very funny.
