I saw the twist, but since that wasn't the point of the book it was fine.
I had some good strong feels while reading this.

Okay, I'm gonna admit it...this book wasn't actually that bad as a book I had to read for school.
Although it was a pretty generical stiry about a whit cishet guy doing dumb shit and making his life better afterwards I was at least enthralled a bit in the story.
The story as well as the storytelling was average and nothing special.
The only thing I am gonna criticize is the fact that there was lack of some representation. Although there were two jewish characters, there were no confirmed BIPOC or LGBT+ characters.

I just love a book that can break your heart while making you laugh at the same time.

enjoyed it! if i were to marry a man named simon in the future, i will name our son alex in honor of this book :)
I really enjoyed the book...right up until the "benefit concert" part. Too much like Drums, Girls, etc.
But again Sonnenblick hits teenage angst and attitude with absolute precision. I enjoyed Alex's letter to the judge.
Of course, the "twist" was easy to figure out.
Still, a decent book for young adults.

Alex is mad at his parents divorce so he gets drunk and drives his mom's car onto the neighbor's lawn. He is sentenced to community service at a nursing home where he meets Sol. Keywords: Divorce, community service, music, juvenile deliquents.
