2.5 stars. Enjoyable on the whole, but kinda unremarkable? The new royal groom mistakes the king for someone else, gives him a lot of backtalk, the king is pretty amused about this and they end up having a sexy interlude that leads to more. It's a fun little premise, and there's plot stuff happening in the background, but it was all just a little flat to me. I wanted more chemistry, more horse stuff, more close-up views of the administration of this kingdom. I could see how the author wanted me to care about relationships outside of the main one, and laid the foundations for that, but it didn't really bear fruit. As for the main relationship... it was cute! Not anything to write home about. There's fair bit of sex and it's fun and kinky and good, but also somehow really flat?? IDK, I just wasn't feeling it. Not that the book was bad in any way; just not a new favourite or anything.

I really enjoyed this story - it was a lovely low angst and sweet love story with a spritz of impact play and a touch of political intrigue to keep things exciting. I had thought Sarah Honey was a new-to-me author, but it turns out I have read a enjoyed her work with Lisa Henry. I definitely enjoyed these characters, from the poor and abused teen who becomes chancellor to the kick-ass princess who can wield a sword and knows her own mind, to the stable master who was accidentally named Mother. Leo and Felix suit each other well, and their banter is very cute.

A great romp
Sweet and kinky with a little danger! I liked this pair enough to just go with the flow on some nitpicky details and just enjoy the ride!

I didn’t love or hate this book. It didn’t give much but wasn’t terrible. I would have loved a bit more angst and plot but what can you except with a book this short. The ending was a bit convenient for me to enjoy and I would like to add that if I was in Leopold’s position and I learned I had a son who my father and best friend had known about and hid from me for 15ish years, I’d be more than miffed. His casually attitude about it made it really unrealistic in my opinion. 2.5 stars
