Even without having read Phasma, I absolutely loved this book! Vi is a great character, and Archex is so complex! Both were incredibly interesting to follow through this little adventure to establish the Resistance hideout on Batuu.

I loved the way the author explored the trauma of both main characters and how they made peace with it. For all its traumatic events, Star Wars rarely explores the after effects on characters. It’s gotten better in written material over the years (THR doesn’t shy away from it), but it’s still marginal from what I’ve seen in both visual and written canon material. So to have not one, but both MCs learn to live with their trauma at each other’s hand is just *chef kiss*

All the characters were interesting, and – as a Disney World fan – I love learning more about the lore of Galaxy’s Edge. But Vi and Archex are definitely my favourite here. And Vi being ace and Archex being autistic-coded are just the cherry on top.

I shall now go back and read Phasma. I need to know how things happened for them to get there.

When I started this book, I did not realize it is pretty much a direct sequel to Phasma (which I have not read). It does its job of building out the world and setting for Galaxy’s Edge, but that’s about it. I’m not very compelled by the sequel trilogy narrative, so the stakes were too low for me (maybe they would be higher if I’d read Phasma?).

Black Spire was an unexpected delight. I instantly fell in love with Vi Moradi when I read Phasma earlier this year so it was very fun to see her figure out how to move on from what happened on the Absolution. The story did an excellent job balancing character growth and external action. I absolutely raced through the audiobook so I could find out what was going to happen to this cast of characters that won me over.

At its core, this was a story about a queer found family with the added bonus that it was set in a galaxy far, far away. I really enjoyed Black Spire. Delilah Dawson is becoming one of my favorite Star Wars authors.
