I’m going to be honest, I hated this book, which is rare for me. Came very close to DNF’ing this—I’ve never had to work so hard to push through a <200 page novella.

I can respect the author’s writing skill, but this was very much Not For Me. It just felt like neverending misery/torture porn... it was nauseating at times.  While the prose style was unique, the post-apocalyptic setting and the underlying “mystery” felt like a retread of many books that have gone before—not much new to offer there.

I truly don’t get the hype for this book.

slow-paced

Ummm lame? Starts interesting but then it's more of the same, doesn't really develop a plot, or have a point, until 50% of the way through the book. After that point, again, it's fine and somewhat interesting, but the ending is underwhelming, and I don't have the stomach for animal cruelty scenes

The Unworthy drops you into a dystopian, cult-like world that’s both fascinating and horrifying. I loved the eerie setting of the creepy religious convent, the sense of isolation, and the way the story slowly unraveled through the unnamed narrator’s diary.

That said, I really wanted more world-building, like Tender is the Flesh. Especially around the different “types” of women—diaphanous spirits, the enlightened, the worthy. I kept waiting for deeper explanations that never fully came, which left me a little unsatisfied. Still, this is a chilling, unsettling read. Not for the squeamish, but definitely for those who like dark and twisted quick reads.
