Agustina Bazterrica is on a singular mission to destroy my soul. I couldn't put this down

This was equal parts fascinating and slow. The prose was difficult to read and adjust to with it being somewhat…choppy and ambiguous? I actually liked it because I thought it fit the mental state of the narrator, though I’ve never read Tender is The Flesh (or anything else by this author), so maybe it’s just Bazterrica’s writing style or a product of the translation.

I was eager to learn more about this cult right off the bat, and some scenes definitely built the suspense, but overall I found the pacing too slow. I was glad this was such a short read because it took much longer than I expected to finish it.

I did like the way the main character transformed over the course of the story. The history of environmental collapse and the romance were strong positive aspects to the story as well.

The ending I found to be extremely typical. Predictable is fine for me, TYPICAL is not. I didn’t really feel like there was anything new being said, and I didn’t have much to take away from this read.

I think with faster pacing and a fresher take from the ending, this could have been great!

Emotional and harrowing in a way that sticks with you. Bazterrica is a master of balancing hope and depravity in her dystopias.

I’m not entirely sure how I felt about this book. As you read you soon discover that you are reading what seems to be our protagonists journal. Now the concept of the book being her written thoughts and memories is exciting idea. With that being said, I found it a bit difficult to understand her accounts of her experiences as she writes in way that reflects her mental state. Which left me a bit confused at times. However the story and memories become clearer as she becomes more aware of the world she’s in.

I think the book does a really nice job of showcasing our protagonists complex progress but I’m not sure if I would say the story captured my attention until a bit later in the book. Moreover, even then, the ending didn’t leave me with as much of a visceral reaction that I had with ‘Tender is the Flesh.’ I think the book was interesting and is worth a read but not a favorite of mine after one read.
