I am the target audience in every conceivable way and yet it’s just a miss for me. The ending wasn’t a surprise in the slightest, almost fully what you’d expect from a religious cult. It’s yucky but nothing new. Everything else was just sorta meh.

There are few humane theologies born from disaster and death, and survival is ugly in nearly all its dimensions when the sacrifice for it is our humanity. When our memories of who we were fail us in a chaotic world, even the darkest, most torturous voices can provide enough order to mimic refuge. Even still, Bazterrica shows us that the practice of charity and community is the only theology we need. Even under glorified torture, our humanity is not lost when we find refuge in each other.

This was a fast read. From the beginning we don’t know much about the main character, but throughout the novel we learn her story. I thought it was interesting that we never learned her name. There is a strong sense of character development, although at times it is still hard to sympathize with her.
