Kolbert paints bleak tapestries of our future as a species, but she offers plenty of insight as well. While this book never rises to the beauty of The Sixth Extinction, it is nonetheless a compelling look at what humans have done to negatively impact the planet, and what we’re doing to save it. The bottom line? The only way to save nature may be to engineer it, and thus dismantle its identity as “nature” completely.
