In the end, "The Great Khan's atlas contains also the maps of the promised lands visited in thought but not yet discovered or founded: New Atlantis, Utopia, the City of the Sun, Oceana, Tamoe, New Harmony, New Lanark, Icaria." Khan also looks to explore "...the cities that menace in nightmares and maledictions: Enoch, Babylon, Yahooland, Butua, Brave New World."

I was overly aware of how difficult rating 'Invisible Cities' would be throughout reading it. While there were parts that really struck me, they tended to be odd lines or turns of phrase, only rarely full 'cities'; I felt I spent most of the book waiting for a breakthrough or at least to be moved out of my sustained sense of '...and?' The majority of what I enjoyed occured late on, which added to the expectance of an enlightenment that did not come. Perhaps a later reread will provide, but right now I can't see myself wanting to give it another go. A strange experience of a book.

Primeira leitura do ano que fiz para o meu desafio de ler pelo menos um livro de cada continente no ano...
O livro é bom, mas não era o que EU estava imaginando. Sabia que o livro tinha como cenário as narrações de viagens de Marco Polo a Kublai Kan sobre as cidades além de seu império, mas confesso que esperava um tipo diferente de narrativa ou contexto no qual esse cenário era apresentado.
Torna-se claro que a narração das cidades tem moldes em cada capítulo, e que Calvino busca, ainda que narrando cada uma em suas individualidades, criar grupos de cidades que seguem o mesmo “padrão” para sua descrição.
A obra tem sua profundidade, intercalando os capítulos sobre cidades com diálogo entre Marco Polo e Kublai e não deixa de ter uma simbologia muito bonita em várias passagens. Como disse, a obra não é ruim, mas não funcionou pra mim como imaginei.

It's so beautiful! It's just descriptions of made-up cities but there is something about it that feels *more*.

At first the structure of this book really threw me; I didn’t understand why the sections were divided up and organized the way they are. Honestly I still don’t understand, but I no longer care. This book is enchanting and achingly beautiful, with lavish descriptions of cities visited by Marco Polo. Reading this, I was lost & found at the same time.
