This is a character study of a twisted man. The violence is mostly understated, there is not a lot of gore or blood in this book. The focus on scent and perfume gave some much needed originality. My only compliant is that the author makes some gross comments about the female victims in this novel. I do not need to know how the breasts of a dead teenager look. The middle section gets a little boring. The beautiful writing makes it worth a read.

This book was really interesting. I found myself bored while reading most of it, especially in the sections where Grenouille is not present. However, I now understand and respect the author’s intent with writing Grenouille’s absences. Some really interesting metaphors, some really unsettling scenes. That ending… wow.

I found that the book dragged on quite a bit during the second half, but whoa - that ending. Amazing!

The amount of filler brings down this otherwise well-written and absorbing book which feels like a good novella that was padded out into an okay novel. It took a lifetime to get going and there were some sections that were excruciatingly slow, but thankfully the final act was worth suffering for
