The writing style is nice, though there is very little dialogue and that usually bothers me.
CWs: the n word and g word are used in the text!

This is a character study of a twisted man. The violence is mostly understated, there is not a lot of gore or blood in this book. The focus on scent and perfume gave some much needed originality. My only compliant is that the author makes some gross comments about the female victims in this novel. I do not need to know how the breasts of a dead teenager look. The middle section gets a little boring. The beautiful writing makes it worth a read.

An interesting writing experiment in that it is written mostly using the sense of smell. The book is lush in descriptions and exploration of an evil main character is kind of fun. Its an interesting read but not fun or relaxing. There is not much plot until the second half of the book plot and there is basically no character development. I don't agree with it's lord of the flies-esque commentary on the inherent evil of humanity, but it is an interesting commentary. It is fairly misogynistic so fair warning.

i am going to kill every member of my book club that voted for us to read this and make a perfume that smells like them. except these perfumes will not make an entire french town have an orgy bc they will smell very silly due to having chosen a dull, silly book.

Ths book was far away from being even remotely enjoyable. The pedophilia and sexism was blatant and disgusting.
The moment Laure's father described his 16-year old daughter boobs and wished, he was a stranger to rape her in her sleep was the last straw. <spoiler/> From a psychological standpoint, this was a disaster too. No human on earth is born with no emotion without enduring trauma. The main character seemed to have his whole life plan ready once he came out of the womb. "Everything he did was planned" my shit. I know not every book has to be realistic, but come on, I expected some realism after no spoiler for fanatsy.
