dark funny mysterious medium-paced

Fiction about some flatmates who get involved in a social media investigation of a murder that happened 30 years ago. A promising start but felt the ending was a bit ridiculous. Also found the narration really funny at times, but the social media lingo/references got a bit annoying

Claire "Kirby" Cornell is a young journalist with a (kind of) tumultuous past. She moves to a small town go get away from her mistakes, but only ends up making more.

This book is a page turner, for sure. By the 4th or 5th chapter I was hooked and ready to keep reading until the big reveal. The author does a great job of leaving all the breadcrumbs and clues for the reader to think they'll have it all figured out. just to throw a wrench in that later with the ending. Overall, it's well written and edited. The ending happens too quick and feels rushed. The resolution is kind of glossed over. And if you like your fiction to have a little happy ending romance to it, this isn't that. I recommend this book for people who like modern thrillers.

What bothers me about the book is the way that Claire is portrayed seems off to me. As a woman close to the age of this main character I feel that the constant references to how Gen Z is (allegedly) is targeted at a much older audience, unless it's part of the satire and I'm just not understanding. 29 is just not that old to me? Certainly not old enough to be so disconnected from the online Gen Z world as this book implies. The characters lack depth to me. Everything seems just surface level, not much deeper.

Furthermore, if you enjoy super modern pop culture references in your fiction you'll have no shortage in this book. Sometimes the word choice was lack luster, but not so much so that it takes you out of the story for very long.

I enjoyed the author’s first book Don’t Swipe Right, and the premise for Everyone in the Group Chat Dies sounded interesting and fun as well. Unfortunately this one fell flat for me and I found myself skimming from 50% on to just find out what happened. I felt bored and like things weren’t moving along, and I also didn’t feel connected to any of the characters or their decisions.

It’s not badly written and there are some funny lines, but ultimately this one was not for me.

Thank you Gallery Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Kirby ends up back in the town where disaster struck a year before. A complicated murder mystery involving several characters, a crow and a group of friends. Easy enough to read.

While the premise of this book was good, the effort was not so much.: I felt as if I was reading a mix of horror-lite, whiny teenager, and social media wanna-be's with a touch of weird friends vibe and small-town misfits thrown in. At the heart of this book are several mysteries all revolving around a killing spree decades ago, a new killing spree, a social influencer, and a dying small town. Throw in some red herrings, a few misunderstandings, slimly-drawn characters, and a yearly Crow-themed festival, and there's your story. While I did not figure out the ultimate bad person before the big reveal, I also did not really care enough about any of the characters to try too hard. This was lite fun for a while, but ultimately, not my cup of tea.
