I'm flopping between 2.75 and 3...but let me give pros and cons. 

PROS
- the indie bookstore I bought it from put the sales of this book to a trans organization.
- deofols. 
- the MMC was quippy and really what kept me reading.
- artwork on the cover is beautiful. 

CONS
- it's not a cliffhanger if you feel like there are pages missing. 
- for a story based on fanfiction...that is not actually fanfiction... you sure are expected to just know a lot about the world.
- though the overall idea is interesting...most of the plot is boring and repetitive. 

In the end, I would probably read the second one to find out what happened to the children, but I would just wait for however long on Libby.

This book was such a disappointment for me. The plot itself wasn't terrible and the world-building was passable (though it did seem undecided on whether it wanted to be gaslamp or urban romantasy). However, the banter gets old pretty fast (they literally just argue over the same things) and Osric has absolutely no redeeming qualities about him that would make me want to care for him. Like, the only reason I cared about Osric in the slightest was so that he would leave Aurienne, an overworked but gifted healer dealing with a literal pandemic at her healing center, alone after she healed him. Plus, I felt that some of Knightley's turns of phrase was pretty weird, and I don't know if it's because of the British dialect she wrote the book in or she was attempting to make a joke, but I was not getting it at all.

Okay this book is a SLOW BURN! It takes you a minute to really figure out what is going on. Stick with it. The payout is totally worth it. The banter was bantering. The humor was dry. 5 stars. 

I'd say this is like a fantasy version of Butcher and Blackbird. Funny. Murders. Mystery. Slow burn romance
