I used to love the early Steph Plum books but they got to a point where they were repetitive, boring and tried too hard to be funny. Sadly this has carried across to this series. Basically if you have read one JE book then you have read them all. The characters and dialogue and over the top situations are interchangeable. There is nothing distinctive about any of them. I mean Vernon- Emmerson's cousin -was indistinguishable from Lula in dialogue and turn of phrase.

what I wrote about the first in this series holds true,

"I'm not sure i can deal with another evanovich series where it's just fast paced dialogue, some zany characters, and zero sex. it was fine. it was what you would expect from an evanovich novel."

and yet, here I am having read the sequel. sigh.

Shamefully, I started this audiobook and realized too late that it was the second in the series and not the first. But by then I was already two discs in and committed. However, that did not hinder my love for this book. Emmerson may just be my favorite Evanovich man now (Sorry Morelli). He is stupendously eccentric, funny, and charming. I loved his dynamic with Riley, and I can't wait to go back and read the first and await the next book. There were so many references in this book that I loved. All the disney, Friends (UNAGI), and more. I can't wait for more and more. Not to mention all the National Parks. The characters were fabulous, the mystery was fun, and I loved it.

I thought this book was part of the Fox and O'Hare series or I wouldn't have requested it. I didn't love the first book in this series and this book was... well, more of the same with added levels of frustration.
If you know anything about Yellowstone National Park, anything at all, you should not read this book. It is infuriating. I get that this is fiction and I can take aspects of that but it doesn't seem like the author (or any of the editors) even took the time to look at the the park's website or look at a single map. Emerson, Riley, et al. are supposedly staying at the Old Faithful Inn which, according to this book is next to Yellowstone Lake (not Lake Yellowstone) which is in the Lake area instead of putting it, oh, hmmmm, what are the possibilities here? Maybe in the Old Faithful area? Which is on the opposite side of the park. With a fabulous Inn that does not have minibars, nor bathrooms to provide shampoos and Listerine. Not in the rooms these characters are supposedly staying in.
The author keeps trying to describe a secret government facility that some hikers probably accidentally discovered when they tried to hike from Lamar to "the canyon." Is she trying to describe the Lamar Canyon (i.e. where the roads go?) or does she mean the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone? Even the description of the Yellowstone Center for Resources building is off. If you're going to include real elements in your fictional books they should be, I don't know, real? Like, if the Sour Creek Dome is a major plot point, maybe you should figure out where exactly it is in the park (FYI: near the Lake Area -- awfully close to where these characters are supposedly staying)
And god forbid any of the history be correct. Somehow she seems to imply that Teddy Roosevelt created a secret subset of the Park Police (not a thing, but I could go with it). What I can't go with, the National Park Service wasn't created until 7 years after Teddy was in office so there really wasn't any way he could have done that.
The "bad guys" in this story had no development and apparently no spine. Emerson and Riley spout these crazy theories and
The only joy I got in reading this book was the knowledge that I could then pass it on the Yellowstone Research Library.

I love these soft, fluffy reads. I will always pick up these types of books in order to reset after more difficult, heavy reads.

I much prefer the Stephanie Plum series and the Diesel books, and the Fox & O'Hare books to this series. It's not awful, and it's not great, would make for a good summer beach book as there's adventure and little attention needed to follow along.

this was book #2 and just as entertaining as the first one. The characters are just funny but with a good mystery. I really enjoyed this one too.
