I am a fan of the Spenser series and this writer is closest to Robert B Parker in tone. Love the books that have Hawk and Susan prominent in the storyline.

I have to admit, I loved Ace Atkin's past efforts at writing Spenser...so much so that I felt he was spot-on. As if he were merely typing from Parker's notes.

SLOW BURN feels a bit more....pedestrian. Part of it may be the plot (Spenser solves an arson), but SLOW BURN doesn't seem to have Atkin's usual spark.

But that just means I can look forward to the next Atkins Spenser book....

Why do I put myself through this? In the forlorn hope that some one of the authors selected by Parker's estate may actually some day approach his writing style. Atkins isn't that author. Though formulaic, Parker has a unique and competent writing style, and though it is easy to see Atkins trying to be Parker, he just ins't successful in the details that matter. Too much foul language, jerky-jerky flow to the story line, convenient plot twists, shallow sidekicks (Hawk, Z, Vinnie, etc.), it all adds up to a very much less than satisfying Parker experience.

Fire bugs at work in this one. Atkins has really done s nice job of carrying the characters forward in this series. Spenser is hired to find out the truth behind-a year old fire in a church and ends up with a much bigger story. His apt burns down, do he snd Susan explore relationship issues too.

I enjoyed this book -- it was very different than many mystery books. They book is about Spenser trying to catch the arsonist that claimed the life of three firefighters in an old church building. You knew who the arsonists are real soon in the story but the story is about how Spenser is able to catch them.

Robert B Parker may be gone, but is definitely not forgotten. I have always loved the Spenser novels and I'm glad they're continuing. It's like putting on a comfy jacket after a while - it just feels good to have Spenser, Hawk and Susan still in play.
