This took me a long time to get through, but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's quite slow paced until the last 100 or so pages. I'm not overly invested in the story or the characters, but I love death elements in fantasy so I'll continue with the series.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! the world building was beautiful, the characters development was natural. nothing was rushed and the story sets you up for the current events.

Note to reader: the first half of the chapters are past tea finding out she's a bone witch and learning the asha ways. the second part of the chapters are current day tea telling her story of the past to a bard as she prepares for a great battle. you're getting peices of the past that give context to the future. this is an advanced reader book.

the book starts with tea raising her deceased brother fox from the dead and learning she is a bone witch, an asha, but bone witches are the most unliked of the Asha. her mentor lady makayla trains her and educates her on the politics of each kingdom. she also gets hazed by another Asha, which causes tea to lose control and raise an army of dead which uncovers a secret the current king wanted buried. the end had me on the edge of my seat and I ran to buy the second book.

Highly recommend this book!
