I just kept getting memoirs of a geisha vibes. Definitely felt like the entire book was fixated on the outfits rather than storyline. Definitely a swing and a miss on this one.

I was originally debating on whether to give this book 3 or 3.5 stars. I really loved the storytelling and the way it immersed me into the world, but it did feel like it lacked excitement in some areas. It was 300+ pages before I really felt like we were hitting any sort of true climax-then of course it all moved quickly from there.

What boosted my review to a 4 was literally the last page. It's very rare when a book surprises me. Sure, sometimes I'll come across something unexpected, but nothing that surprised me enough that I literally said "WHAT!?" out loud. That alone was so fun and had me picking up the next book immediately.

Listening to the series on audio book. I do wish I was reading it because the world building and magic systems are gorgeous.

This book has been on my TBR for so long I wanted to love it so bad! The book wasn't in itself bad but the pace was slow and the information was just so heavy. There weren't many scenes where it was more than just information being dumped. I'm a little put off to continue the series but I can't say I didn't like it entirely. I liked Tea, I enjoyed the way she went from afraid to bold. I didn't really get too into the world building which was a big downfall for me. Overall the book is closer to a 2.5 star than 3 but I may continue the series in good faith the first book was just there to fill you in on the journey as a start.
