I really wanted to love this book, but unfortunately there were a few things that just didn’t work for me.

The magic and world was something that I found myself very drawn to. It was such an interesting concept, and it was probably my favorite part of the book.

However, the storyline itself was very slow paced and overly descriptive. I was pulled out of the story so much due to the excessive wording. There were so many unnecessary side stories that did not add to the plot at all.

In addition or perhaps because of the excessive description, I had a hard time connecting to characters. I felt so pulled out of the storyline by the end.

I don’t know if I’ll continue on with this series. I listened to this first book on audio, and I found myself increasing the speed multiple times just to get through it.

A month after finishing this, I'm finally going to write the review

Let me just start by saying that I only picked this up because my roommate dared me too; we read the description together and it sounded so bad and she likes to see me suffer

I HATED THIS BOOK. SO MUCH. It only got two stars because the ending was kind of interesting, and I liked a couple of the side characters (the designer dude and the kid who wanted to be an asha but couldn't because of sexism. I liked those two a lot and I still can't remember their names, that's how boring this book was). If not for those two factors, this The Bone Witch easily would have gotten one star.

I will mention the one thing that I loved about this book. Just one thing. And it's the story lines of the two side characters I mentioned above. I really liked that Chupeco talked about that issue, of these two men wanting to do pursue something that's seen as "feminine" and not being allowed to do so because of it. The scene where tea is trying to get the dude who makes the hua's to make one for her friend, and someone mentions his struggles in becoming the best designer anyone had ever seen, that part actually made me cry. It was so sweet

Aside from that, everything else pretty much sucked. It took me four months to read this. FOUR MONTHS. IT WAS THAT BORING. There was barely a plot. Very few characters had any sort of development, the world building wasn't very good, the plot was waaaay too slow paced. Everything about this was bad. I definitely won't be reading the second book

i’m interested in the world building and the characters and the writing style. my only issue with this book was that it’s slow and that the moment you are invested in one perspective it immediately switches into the other perspective, which kind of halt the progression and the flow of the book.

I started to read this and couldn't get past the first few pages, but then the audiobook became available and I DEVOURED it. I love the world building and the characters. Really looking forward to the rest of the series.

I don't know if I wasn't in the mood or it wasn't clicking but it was a snore fest. The female narrator is amazing. Truly a voice actor. My only complaint there was the FMC was insufferable and whiney. I don't know if it was the narrator's choice of voice, the authors input, or production choice but I couldn't stand her. Also it changes POV and you don't know who's head your in. You really have to pay attention to this audiobook. This isn't a background noise book. In fact it would probably be best as an immersion read. I think it could have been interesting but I was lost.

I rarely DNF books but I can't keep reading this one! This book was just painful for me to read and switching to the audiobook made it worse.

In reading other reviews, I found myself agreeing with the most-stated criticism: this is a great idea executed only fairly. But! Like one or two other books I've read recently, I feel like this was a failing on the part of the editor, as opposed to the author. If I had to describe the book in one word it would be "loose." The passage of time is unclear, where people are is unclear. I found myself consulting the map continuously because my mind was on "where are they now? Is that where she's from? How did they get there all of a sudden?" Even now I can't picture any locations in this story other than one lake. Mountains? Valleys? Deserts? No idea.

On the other hand. I do feel like this is a series with which I want to continue. The magic system is interesting. The gender roles are interesting. Unlike many other reviewers I didn't find the story boring at all. It's heavily steeped in politics and social maneuvering though, so if you're an "action, action, action" person, this may not be the book for you. But if you are interested in following one young girl from small village girl to the woman who is going to "break the wheel," this installment may be worth your time.

Also, 11 out of 10 stars for the ending. I saw it coming but it was a well-executed cliff-hanger!
