Tea isn't sure what kind of gifts she'll have. Will she be a healer or good with plants like her sisters? When her brother dies, she can't live without him, so she brings him back from the dead. Now she knows she is a bone witch. Knowing that bone witches are feared and hated by many, Tea must leave her home and go before The Oracle to find out what is to become of her. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one. I received a copy of this book from Net Galley.

I have conflicting feelings towards The Bone Witch. Although I loved the worldbuilding, the magic system, and some aspects of the characters, the plot was quite uneventful and reminiscent of many other YA fantasy books, often using the same tropes without adding any originality.

The story telling was interesting as it’s told through the main character, Tea, as she is recounting her journey to a bard years later. Tea as a character was pleasant to follow and has everything to be a perfect anti-hero. I would be curious to see the evolution of her character in the next books even if I’m not yet sure if I will continue the series.

On the other hand, the pacing was very slow, and I was hoping for a more atmospheric read. The Bone Witch was my first book by Rin Chupeco and I loved their prose! Despite some info-dumps, it was enjoyable to read, and I will be sure to check out more of their books in the future.

This was not what I expected at all! In the best way possible. I’ve been fascinated by this cover for ages, and hadn’t reread the synopsis, though the first line (as well as tagline?) caught me straight away. I know some people have been disappointed by the turn that this tale takes – into what is reminiscent of a story about becoming a companion in a geisha-style, or perhaps the Korean equivalent? I found it so interesting to just follow her life and training, even though I sometimes, I confess, forgot that we were supposed to be training to raise the dead. I did struggle a bit at first and to be fair most of the way through to understand exactly what position and responsibilities these girls have – as they’re training as companions but then also learning how to fight, use magic, become body guards… what? Still, loved it, can’t wait to continue on!

The world of The Bone Witch is enchanting and dark, perfect for fans who like their magical worlds with an edge. I was riveted by the storytelling between two characters—Tea—recounting her ostracization and then ascent as a Dark Asha at the Willows—and Bard, revealing her shift into a renegade/revolutionary in control of the villainized Deva.

Wonderful writing and storytelling! I am currently on the waitlist for Book 2.
