I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
Tea discovers she is a bone witch when she accidentally raises her brother from the dead at his funeral. Mykaela, another bone witch, happens to be in the area at the time. Mykaela takes Tea and Fox, her brother, to the Willows to train to become a dark asha. The world of ashas is different from anything Tea has known, and she has a lot to learn beyond just her official classes.
Being the first in a series, it felt like the book ended just when it was starting to get good. Some parts of the story held my interest better than others, but overall I enjoyed this book and can’t wait to find out what happens in the next installment. I thought the concept of heartsglass in the book was neat.

3.75 stars. interested to see the next one, to see how the flash forwards connect with the main narrative, as they don't quite mesh enough rn for me to enjoy them fully. the setting and world is SO cool, though. I love so many of the supporting characters - Fox is my favorite.
My favourite book ever it is just amazing and I can't recommend it enough. We follow Tea's journey as she grows as a person and her magic and is just such a great read.
When I first opened the pages of The Bone Witch trilogy, I didn't expect much. The premise of a girl finding herself to be the hated dark witch has been done a lot --I do love this trope but I am selective in my reads. Yet as I followed Tea's journey in the trilogy, I got immersed in the wonderful worldbuilding and magic system. But above all, I was fascinated by the character arc that Tea had.
We followed her journey as she just discovered her power by accidentally bringing back her brother to life. She started SO innocent and gullible and SO fun as she learned her magic from scratch! As the story progressed, she grew into a strong woman full of heartbreaks and scars who had no choice but to make difficult decisions.
Tea was one dark witch against a broken societal system that trampled her kind with lies and politics. And she rose above it all; she became the one who could either destroy or save the world–depending on how her tale would be written.
The world building was wonderful and full of diversity. It allowed the story to put powerful nuances such as discrimination, prejudices, double standards, politics, and a broken societal system. I found a lot of mixed Asian and Western references which I truly enjoyed.
As a minority, I really love the idea of a girl collapsing an unjust system built upon lies and prejudice into a rain of fire. Therefore, this trilogy became so much more to me than a mere young adult fantasy story. Not only that, I love the friendship and siblings love this story portrayed.
The storytelling was poetic yet very easy to read and I finished the entire trilogy in a week (with an exam in between lol). Tea's journey was written in a dual timeline; one started from the first time she discovered her power and the other was written after she had lost everything. The first timeline would catch up with the second on the third book arriving at an epic world-changing conclusion.
