Why did it take me so long to read this book??? I’ve had it since August!! This world is incredibly interesting and full of surprises. Honestly, I wasn’t sure at the beginning how much I would like this book. It threw a lot of lore and made-up words at me all at once and it was kinda confusing. But man oh man- it came together. I loved Tea’s arc, I loved the back and forth between past and present, and I loved all the different characters and the world building. This is good fantasy. I can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy.

I liked the premise of the book, but found myself getting a little annoyed with some of the story line. Some of it was a little too “Memoirs of a Geisha” for me.

Well, since I JUST finished this, I'm still on wth? I was not entirely sold on continuing the series, but I might need to get some answers....

This book unfolds at a notably slow pace, and I found my interest wavering until the very last moments. While I appreciated the unique storyline and the intricate world-building, some elements felt excessive or redundant. I was hoping for more than just the exploration of the world and the intricacies of training and magic. Ultimately, it felt like the plot only progressed significantly at the beginning and the end. I rated it 3 stars. The writing was captivating at times, painting vivid images of the world and its characters in my mind. However, the overall lack of momentum left me feeling bored and uninspired.

3.5 stars. The first 125 pages or so moved so quickly and I was very invested! After that, things ground to a standstill, and I skimmed and skipped pages of the dance scene/story. Things were very juicy towards the end, but I'm not sure I'm invested enough to read the sequels.

This wasn’t the worse but also wasn’t the best. The premise of the book was fantastic!

I loved the Bone Witches and the magic they wield. It was a slower paced book dispite the fact the story jumped ahead in big sections, but I didn’t really mind as it’s short enough anyway and I’m assuming a lot of this is set up for the next books.

However this book was definitely on the younger side of YA books, just not enough detail for me. A lot of things a very vague - for example:
1. the magic system, it’s never really explained what the cost of the magic is that the other Asha’s wield?
2. The heart glass things didn’t really make a-lot of sense - they were described as a source of power but only seemed to be used as like a weird on display mood ring where everyone else can see what you are feeling?

Overall it was a decent book, not amazing but not terrible. I think it would be best suited for younger readers

Wanted to rate 3.5 but goodreads doesn't allow half stars.
interesting magic system and story, became very interested and gripped to Tea's story. I love the structure; some chapters of the current time and then the flashbacks going back and telling the story of how "we" got to this point. frustrating some parts do not get explained e.g what happened with Tea and Fox, and Tea and Kalen. assuming book 2 will delve into it.
