Inventive story with a new concept of magic based on a mix of several cultures. The flashback method is captivating and confusing both. I look forward to reading on.

If you want a book that’s all world building and nothing really happens? This is the book for you. The romance with the FMC and the prince is random and makes no sense. The magic system is confusing and you’d think in a book that’s 98% world building there would be more time to explain/understand the magic system but no. I’m sure the rest of the series gets better because the world does sound cool but all this world building with no true focus has me burnt out. The flash forwards to “present time” are so painfully uninteresting that I cringe every time it starts back up but to be honest even the “past” stuff doesn’t hold much interest for me either.
Absolutely hate when a reading slump hits in the middle of a good book. Check your timings reading slumps.
I never know what to say when the end of a book leaves me expecting bad things, because damn it, why did I like it if it announces bad things for my favourite characters?! But it really only means that I liked it THAT much. Fortunately I have the rest of the trilogy and will be oddly happy to be able to suffer some more in this story.
With little more to say that won't be spoilers, as I do prefer to avoid pressing that button - although, believe me when I say that there would be A LOT to write about if I did go for spoilers - I shall take my leave of the Willows the rest of my story surely lies in the world beyond it's safety.

I liked this more than I expected after reading the first chapter (which is the worst chapter of the book). I loved the Geisha inspiration for the Asha and the mystery brewing in the background. There are many interesting ideas explored within this story, like the familiar bond between Tea and Fox and what that would mean for siblings. Well worth a read, even though I would appreciate more complex mysteries.

I want to re-read it because I listened to the audiobook and it was terrible! I think it would be good though if the main character wasn’t voiced to be a whiney terrified child who is an idiot.
