Felt like a fantasy/YA inspired memoirs of a geisha. Don't think I'll bother to continue the series...

I was a bit disappointed. First, the pros. I like how the book was separated into two parts- in the present and then in the past. I loved the beginning and the premise of the story and the world building was very good, I loved the raising of the dead, the monsters, the magic and all that jazz. Plus I liked the dark academia theme with learning about the magic and all that and I thought the heart glasses were a super interesting idea. Now for the cons. Sadly, I thought there was too much about the social/entertaining element of the ashas which bored me out of my skull and I didn't think the characters (nor their interactions) were that interesting. I didn't connect or care about any of them. Additionally, I'm just super tired of the "mean girl" trope and where two girls become enemies for no reason.
Excellent writing but in dire need of a better editor. It's a great universe, albeit very depressing as girls and boys are not Free To Be You And Me. Our protagonist is a very powerful witch but suffers from a major lack of self-esteem which is culturally reinforced. Nothing much happens to move the story forward, this book is all retrospective.

Honestly, I’m hooked on Chupeco’s writing now. This fantasy world is complex and yet easy to navigate from Tea’s perspective. And what a wonderful narrator Tea is! I love the introduction of magic through her eyes, I love the way Tea chafes against traditions that no longer make sense. I think the world of the ashas is so interesting, and vivid! The descriptions are tantalizing and visual, the action is well paced and intense, and the characters are so well written. This is altogether a wonderful reading experience for the witchy lovers out there, and I am so excited to read the next one!

The last few chapters of this book saved it from being a one star book and I am going to read the next one. It took that long for the plot to appear. The rest was just a lot of description and extra information.
