Fine and fun fluff. It's an interesting world, and I'm glad to know there's a whole lot more to come.
Verity Price is trying to figure out her life. She loves ball room dancing but her family has been protecting Cryptids for generations. Throw in a conflicted Covenant operative and the possibility of legends not being extinct and things just got more complicated.
I liked Verity. She's a lot impulsive but has good intentions.

McGuire writes great urban fantasy - engaging and diverse characters immersed in unusual plotting. Highly recommended!
Slightly disappointing. A really intriguing set of ideas, a plausible urban setting, but a lot of the characters feel a touch second-hand. The protagonist wears skimpy clothes and is a professional dancer, which explains her agility, and comes from a family dedicated to the protection of non-human sentient creatures. She encounters the anti-hero, who is sexy, dark, misguided, British. Pretty much Wesley Wyndham-Price, in fact - and I detected overtones of BtVS quite often. The plot was quite well developed, but felt a little mechanical in its structure and development.

Despite a cover that makes me embarrassed to read this book in a public place, I liked this book. Three reasons why: (1) The protagonist is a ballroom dancer. I love ballroom dance so I was pulled in immediately. (2) The protagonist is also a cryptozoologist. Ever since our trip to the Portland (ME) Cryptozoology Museum, I've been hooked. (3) The worshipful mice who hail the protagonist every time she walks in the door. As other have noted, Men in Black did this first ("All Hail K!"). However, when my partner and I saw MIB, ithe scene hit my funny bone and I was unable to stop giggling for the next third of the movie. so worshipful mice make me laugh.
