My name is Verity Price. I'm a cryptozoologist. And this is why I can never get a goddamn date on Saturday night
First 5* book this year and all I can say is...
AWESOME!! :D
Discount Armageddon already snatch my attention for long, but the cheesy cover somehow make me hesitant to read :P. Seanan McGuire is a new author for me. While I want to read Rosemary and Rue, a friend's review is not stellar and again I'd be in doubt.
I'm just glad that I give this one a chance :)
Told from Verity's POV, McGuire writing style hooked me fast. Full of action and never a dull moment. Verity is ass kicking heroine and not annoying. I praise her witty, sarcasm and dry humor and I'm glad that I can sympathize with her. I want Verity to be my friend! Verity also not your usual UF heroines. Often I found an UF heroine occupation always either they are P.I, detective, or some work that man-related. It's not that I against their job. It's just because Verity, beside she's a cryptozoologist, is a dancer! That make sense, though. Dance required a lot of muscle trainings and some dance movements is like a martial art. McGuire describe how Verity's dancing practice help her in kickin her enemy's ass. But more than that, reader will know that Verity really love dancing from her heart. That's what make her very unique and stands out in the sea of UF heroines.
When you're on the stage, nothing else really matters. Nobody's trying to kill you; nobody wants to see your credentials or needs you to get them the gorgon antivenin. It's just you, and the music, and knowing how you're supposed to move. Dancing is all I've ever wanted to do.
What make Discount Armageddon interesting is not just Verity, but the secondary characters as well. We will introduced to Verity "big" family, from her own family, to her cousins and adopted cousin. It can be overwhelming at first. But it make me curious too, to know what the origin of Price family and why they decide to left The Covenant of St George, the organization that hunt cryptids. The cryptids? Well, well, they are the main spotlight. McGuire introduce us to some cryptids that I'm never heard of, such as cuckoo (not that cuckoo bird), bogeymen, Waheela, Madhura, gorgon, dragon and my favorite, Aeslin mice! This talking mice is very funny and provide comic relief with their constantly celebration and holy feast. If only I'm not paranoid when it comes to rat and their family, I really want my own Aeslin mice.
Of course our heroine have her gentleman-love, and his name is Dominic De Luca. Verity and Dominic pretty much an enemy-turn-to-lover type, love-hate relationship. No insta-lust or insta-love, and I believe no "love' word come from both parties. It's not that Verity and Dominic have HEA, more like HFN, but I enjoy their banter too. I can see that Dominic and Verity make a good couple. Dominic's character development also interesting, because he can see the error of his way as a cryptids hunter since not all cryptids are dangerous. Most are harmless and hiding from humanity. Doesn't mean that he will out from the Covenant soon. I can't wait what McGuire have for this couple in the future.
The problem with people who say monsters don't really exist is that they're almost never saying it to the monsters.
Even with the uniqueness that is cryptids, the message of Discount Armageddon is pretty much the same with another UF books. People tends to afraid what they don't understand. The Covenant hunt cryptids mercilessly, see them all as monsters. Cyrptids actually are more like animals. They will not harm you if you don't bother them. They sure can be a dangerous like dragon or manipulative like cuckoo or bogeymen but Price family think that they have the rights to live (except the evil ones). Discount Armageddon show that we can live peacefully with another race or another entity, without judging them first.
I don't hesitant to give this 5* stat, because I really enjoy the story and I think you will love this too. The world in Discount Armageddon is very rich and full of details. McGuire also provide short story that related to Price family and you might want to read it in her site (mostly are free!) to know the background from some characters. She also provide a list of cryptids that shown in the book, complete with their classification. Such a dedication from McGuire! :D I will read the next book, Midnight Blue-Light Special and I want to be entertained by Verity's charm while she try to save the world, one cryptid at a time.

Fun read with interesting takes on supernatural beings.
I have so much fun with Seanans books. Esp this series. I love the family, the fights, the way they were raised, the mice, and sometimes i just have to read a sentence out loud to my daughter because i find it delightfully written and amusing. I never knew there were so many Cryptids out there! really learning a lot just from that.
OH MY GOD THE MICE! MS McGUIRE THEY'RE JUST WHAT I WANTED HOW DID YOU KNOW?!

I was warned going into this, "It's a lot cheesier than Toby, so just be aware."

BRING ON THE CHEESE!!

Verity is less "too stupid to live, too stubborn to die" than Toby, and I LOVE this thing where a ballroom dancer keeps weapons in her tango costume and waits tables in a strip club when she's not out helping monsters. It's amazing. It's so amazing. And she's running around jumping off roofs all like:

and I'm over here all like:

And then there's Dominic...

(see what I did there? I used the Sanctuary .gif because it's kind of the same idea and Amanda Tapping (my queen) is giving him the look. Did you catch that?)
But also like...

ANYWAY!
It's super fun and you should read it :)

My Review Of
Discount Armageddon (InCryptid #1) by Seanan McGuire
This wonderful story takes place in an alternate reality where creatures rule and monsters are among us. The Covenant of St. George works hard to destroy these creatures and the Price family broke away from this secretive group generations ago. Verity Price is a cryptozooligist, the Price family are a family of cryptozoologists, who are tasked with the study and protection of these creatures. Verity Price is a tough as nails heroine and Dominic De Luca is part of the covenant that the Prices are hiding from because if the covenant finds the Prices they will kill them. The unlikely duo of Verity and Dominic pair up to find out why women cryptids are disappearing. After some blood , gore and dancing we find out that there may be a dragon in the underground sewers of NYC. The dragon princesses want their extinct boyfriend back, yes I said dragon princesses! Verity also lives with Aslin Mice who are very religious and live in a converted Barbie Dream-house in Verity's closet. I just loved these mice, they were hysterical and very enthusiastic. Verity lives in a semi-legal sublet and is cocktail waitress/ballroom dancer, can wear high heels and kick-ass all at the same time. Together Dominic and Verity find out who or what is behind the disappearances/slayings of the local female cryptids and the romance begins..... almost like Romeo and Juliet, after all he is a Covenant guy and she is a Price! I happily listened along while this duo slayed the bad monsters, danced and romanced. What a fun book this was for me. I am officially hooked on this series and author. I will be binge listening to this authors books for months to come.

I really enjoyed this but the narrator isn't my cup of tea. She did a good job, inflection ect. but I don't enjoy high pitched voices so I'll stick with the ebooks.
Other than that I want more of the aslin mice! Good story, good world building and the characters are great.
